Week of November 20 and 21

What We Learned this Week: Math : The students were introduced to multiplying a four digit number by a single digit number. I recommend the students practice a bit of multiplication over the Thanksgiving break. Writing : We practiced writing our opinions into claim statements. We look forward to continuing refining our thinking before we start planning out our persuasive writing.  Spelling Class:  Spelling class has changed slightly. There are now two spelling lists. When you click on the link , you will see two pages. Please carefully check for your student's name at the bottom of the document. That will be the list your student will study. Week of November 13 to 17

What We Learned this Week: Bible:  This week, we studied Saul's disobedience to God in addition to the excuses he gave.  Math:  We kicked off the week by learning the shortcut method of multiplying a 2 digit number by another 2 digit number. I encourage the students to really PRACTICE multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. Please feel free to use this video as a reference. If you would like your student to practice at home, I am providing a practice sheet here with an answer key. We then learned how to round numbers when multiplying a 2 digit number by another 2 digit number to check for reasonableness. Week of November 6 to 10

What We Learned this Week: Bible:  We have started our new unit on King Saul- the first king of Israel. We read about how God orchestrated the anointing of Saul and the warnings given to the Israelites.  Math:  We have started to learn how to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers. We are starting off by using the following methods: place value sections, expanded form, and algebraic notation. Soon, we will be learning how to use the shortcut method. Reading:  This week, the students have been learning how to use empathy to imagine the thoughts and feelings of the characters they are reading about. They then were able to think about how their ideas about certain characters have changed as they read. Grammar:  This week, we studied certain Spanish words that can be used to connect two short sentences.   Writing:  We have started our new unit on persuasive writing. Week of October 30 to November 3

What We Learned this Week Bible:  We have ended our study on chapter 6. Our unit has ended with the Israelites asking Samuel to provide a king for them in order to become like the other nations. The students will take the test over this unit on Monday. Study materials were emailed to the parents, and the students took home their study guides this week. Math:  This week, we reviewed the shortcut method for multiplying a two-digit number with a single-digit number. The students then used that knowledge in order to multiply a three-digit number with a single-digit number. We ended the week by carefully examining word problems in order to determine if there was the right amount of information, too much information, or too little information given in order to solve the given problem.  Grammar:  This week, we studied / reviewed some common Spanish verbs that undergo conjugation changes in the present tense in the "yo" ("I) form.
