Week of October 30 to November 3

What We Learned this Week

Bible: We have ended our study on chapter 6. Our unit has ended with the Israelites asking Samuel to provide a king for them in order to become like the other nations. The students will take the test over this unit on Monday. Study materials were emailed to the parents, and the students took home their study guides this week.

Math: This week, we reviewed the shortcut method for multiplying a two-digit number with a single-digit number. The students then used that knowledge in order to multiply a three-digit number with a single-digit number. We ended the week by carefully examining word problems in order to determine if there was the right amount of information, too much information, or too little information given in order to solve the given problem.

Grammar: This week, we studied / reviewed some common Spanish verbs that undergo conjugation changes in the present tense in the "yo" ("I) form. We also studied the instances in which the letters "s," "c," "x," and "z" can make the "s" sound in Spanish.

Reading: We have studied a new unit which will involve us analyzing the characters in the books we are reading. We took some time to imagine the world in which our characters are living.

Writing: Congratulations to our 4th graders! They have finished their realistic fiction stories. They celebrated this occasion by getting together with the other 4th grade sections and reading their stories to their friends. We will be starting a new unit next week.

From Mrs. Boer

MUSIC NOTE FROM MRS. BOER - Recorder music was sent home with your child this week. The expectation for practicing is that your child practices three days a week and each song three times (3X-3X). They can keep track of the days they practice on the calendar that is in their music folders. I will ask them to turn in their calendars at the end of the month so that I can see who is practicing and how much. Please encourage your child to practice and to remember to bring their recorders and music folders to school on the day they have music (and also on certain Fridays because of the rotating schedule). We are becoming Beauty Creators with our recorders!

From the Office

Safety: Now that our morning commutes are darker this season, and since we so value the safety of our student pedestrians and cyclists in the morning, can we please ask a favor? We ask that student cyclists wear reflective clothing, and even have a light on their bikes. In addition, student and adult pedestrians please take extra care when crossing streets and parking lots, especially when in close proximity to our buses. Our bus drivers and drop-offs definitely want to remain accident-free!

For 3rd-5th grade teachers: Kinder Dutch Dance registration is now open! All 3rd-5th grade students are invited to join us. See the attached flyer for more information, then head to http://www.tuliptime.com/getinvolved/dutch-dance to sign up your child! Practice is held on Wednesdays in the gym during lunch recess starting February 21st. Email dutchdancenicolejohnson@gmail.com with questions regarding practice, performances and costumes. Looking forward to growing our group for the 95th Tulip Time Festival! Flyer is attached HERE
