Week of August 26 to 29
What We Learned this Week
Bible: We are kicking off our Bible class by understanding how Scripture interprets Scripture. We are studying the book of Philippians to do so. We investigated the events that took place during Paul's second missionary journey along with the people he met. Ultimately, we learned that Paul's primary focus was to know Christ even more- which should be our motive as well.
This unit is very short, so the students will be taking a quiz over the material we have learned thus far late next week. However, it is quite possible that the quiz will be pushed to early the following week. The students will be given a hard copy of the study guide, and I am including a digital copy of the study guide here as well. I also like to include links to a gamified version of the study guide. The platform is called "Blooket," and the students should be familiar with it. Here are the game links if your student wishes to play the games:
Math: We have done some review work this week. We reviewed expressing numbers in their various forms - standard, expanded, and word. We also reviewed rounding numbers to the nearest 10's, 100's, and "1,000's" in addition to comparing numbers.
If you need some ideas of online math games your student can play to complete his / her weekly math fact homework, here is an idea. This idea came from a handful of students from last year. ☺
Maga Multiplicadora (There are more multiplication games to play here, too.)
Grammar: We reviewed the situations in Spanish grammar that would constitute a verb to be conjugated into the "preterite" and "imperfect" past tenses. The students should be able to recognize if a past tense Spanish verb is conjugated into the "preterite" or "imperfect." We also reviewed common Spanish verbs that undergo major changes once they are conjugated into the "preterite" past tense.
Science: We have kicked off our very first science unit- "Built for Survival." We are learning how plants and animals have adaptations that allow them to grow and survive. This week, we studied how water moves within a plant system via hands-on experiments! We put white carnations into blue-dyed water and celery stalks into red-dyed water. The students observed the changes and have been discussing them and drawing them on large poster boards.
Spelling: The students will be taking their first spelling test on Friday, September 6. Each week in the blog, I will include the link for the following week's spelling words. Your student needs to know the spelling of their assigned thirteen words. You will find your student's name at the bottom of their corresponding list. Your student will also receive a hard copy from me.
Field Trips Update
A new field trip has been added to the SignUpGenius! We will be going to the Hemlock Crossings Nature Center in late January. If you would like to chaperone for that trip, please feel free to sign up! There are a few other field trips that could use some parent chaperones, too! Additionally, be on the lookout for another field trip that will be added soon. We plan on going to the Saugatuck Dunes State Park in late October. More details will be coming!
