Week of September 16 to 20

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We have finished up our study on the flawed prophet Samson. We are now studying another story that took place during the time of Israel's judges- the story of Ruth. We have read up on how Ruth and Naomi traveled back to Bethlehem and how Ruth met Boaz.

The students will be taking the Judges and Ruth Test early in the week of September 30 to October 4. I will be providing the students a physical copy of the Spanish study guide on Monday. I am providing an electronic version of the Spanish study guide here. I am also including an English study guide for parent use only. Feel free to use this resource to support your student.

Additionally, I have made a Blooket using the test questions. I am including the game links here as another study resource for your student.

Math: This week, we have been learning how to use a sum in order to double-check our subtraction problem. We have also been learning how to use estimation in order to check the reasonableness of a given addition or subtraction problem. We then started studying word problems that involve multiple steps in order to solve the given problem.

Reading: This week, we have been focused on making sure that our pacing and style of reading is appropriate for 4th grade. We should be reading fluidly and with expression. We also discussed the importance of making sure that we are truly understanding the words on the page instead of simply getting through the words so that we can turn to the next page quickly.

Writing: The students have selected "heart messages" for their realistic fiction stories and are currently completing their story mountain graphic organizers.

Grammar: This week, we reviewed some of the most commonly used irregular past tense Spanish verbs in addition to some of the most common mistaken made whilst conjugating them. We also studied the Spanish letters "j" and "g" (when before a Spanish vowel) and how they produce the same sound.

Science: The students have finished their posters of animals showing and explaining the animals' external and internal traits that allow them to grow and survive. We are now working on the big written project project for this unit. As a class, we have researched a pumpkin plant's external and internal traits that allow it to grow, survive, and reproduce. The students will now be working on putting the research together into a formal, written report.

Spelling: Here is next week's spelling list.
