Week of September 26 to 30
What We Learned this Week
Bible: We talked about Samson- the strongest man found in Scripture. Even though he was very strong, he still fell victim to temptations. We can be stronger than Samson by reading up about what the Bible warns us about temptation. How can we avoid temptation? We just started our lessons on Ruth. I hope the students are able to recognize Ruth's selflessness and are encouraged to be more like her.
Math: This week, we worked on solving two-step word problems.
Reading: We talked about how good readers take the time to imagine the story they are reading in their heads. This is a really good practice in order to better understand the story.
Writing: The class and I have been talking about my example for a realistic fiction story idea. We added more details about the main character, and they helped me to think about a scene that I could include in my draft. The students were then able to work on their own idea of a scene involving their own characters for the realistic fiction stories.
Science: The students and I are working on the final written summary of all that we learned during these past couple of weeks. They completed their research on pumpkins and should be ready to start writing their papers next week.
Grammar: We reviewed irregular preterite verbs (hacer, ser, ir, andar, etc.), and we also talked about how the /j/ and /g/ letters can sound the same in words such as "gemelos" and "junio."
SO Many Special Events this Week
We had SO many fun events this week! We had lots of fun at the Walk-a-Thon, and the Hispanic Heritage Celebration was a huge success. Thank you, students, for all your hard work. You all did a good job.
The Think Energy presentation was really interesting, too. The students were sent home with their own Think Energy kits (the blue draw string backpack) in addition to a worksheet to complete. I encourage you to fill out that worksheet and turn it in to me by October 11. If I get enough of those worksheets turned in to me, we could earn a grant for our classroom! If you need an extra Think Energy Worksheet, please let me know. I have copies in the classroom.
The field trip to the Outdoor Discovery Center was absolutely beautiful. We got to experience the different types of animal habitats and what is found in each. The students had a great time being adventurous explorers.
Check out the photos to see us in action during these events! I am sorry that the pictures are out of order. Not sure how to fix that!
Spelling Helpful Tip
Parents, I would like to share with you all a helpful website for when it comes time for the students to review and prepare for their weekly spelling tests. Please check out Spelling Training by clicking here. You can create your own unique spelling list and it will generate different games / activities to try using that word list.
