Week of November 14 to 18
Happy Snow Day!
What We Learned this Week
Bible: This week, we are studying how Saul become king. God made it very clear to Saul that he was meant to be king, and Saul heeded him. It makes me wonder and think about ourselves. Do we actively listen to God and do what He asks us to do?
Math: The students are becoming experts at multiplying two digit numbers by two digit numbers. We also compared and contrast the short-cut method to the shortened expanded notation method. I encourage the students to continue to practice multiplying two digit numbers by two digit numbers.
Reading: We are coming to a close for this unit. We finished "The Tiger Rising" and spent some time this week to talk about major themes and the symbolism found in this book. On Tuesday, November 22, the students will be watching the film "The Tiger Rising" with the other 4th grade sections. The students are allowed to come to school in their PJs if they would like. They are also allowed to bring some pillows and blankets. However, their pillows and / or blankets must fit in their backpacks.
Writing: We have started our brand-new persuasive unit. The students studied a few examples of persuasive writing and the elements that are found in persuasive writing. They even tried their hand at coming up with reasons and examples for why the school day should incorporate more free time.
Grammar: This week, we studied reflexive verbs and reflexive pronouns. I think it's so fascinating that these Spanish verbs contain a pronoun right in the verb itself. We also talked about "adversativas" which are words that connect two contrasting ideas. The students could use these words in their upcoming persuasive drafts for writing class.
Science: The students spent this week designing and creating a tool that will allow them to look over the bookcase and the contents on its shelf. This lab applies everything that they have learned about the properties of light and our five senses. Some of the students exemplified impressive work by going home and perfecting their design ideas. The students will have another day to work on this project. Maybe they could take this snow day and plan out some ideas to enhance their tool.
