Week of February 13 to 17

 Happy Snow Day!

I hope everyone got to enjoy this fun Friday snow day!

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we studied the movement of the ark to the City of David and the importance of listening to God's instruction. The students had a hard time understanding Uzzah's punishment of death after touching the ark to prevent it from falling, but we concluded that sometimes we as humans simply cannot comprehend Him. But, what we do know is that we must submit to Him and follow His instructions. We also read about David wanting to construct a better and nicer place of dwelling for the ark of the covenant. David felt bad he lived in a palace while the ark dwelled in a tent. However, God made it clear to David that He did not wish for this change. Never before had He made it clear to His people that he wanted a place other than the tent to house the ark. We learned that we must trust in God's will.

Math: We are doing such a wonderful job learning about the basics of algebra! This week, the students supplied equal and not equal to signs to complete given equations. In addition, they learned how to write an equation as its inverse- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We continued to practice solving for an unknown value in an equation, and the students wrote equations in order to solve word problems.

Writing: This week, we took a look at mentor informational texts from reading class to help us get a visual and understanding of good examples of different types of informational texts. The students also narrowed down their topics and thought about possible subcategories that could ultimately be the future chapters for their upcoming personal informational narrative essays.

Reading: This week, we talked about how good readers take ideas and knowledge from their own life and apply it to what they have read in the text in order to formulate life lessons.

Grammar: We reviewed the Spanish conditional tense, and the students worked on a poster illustrating and writing about what would happen to our beaches if we continue to litter them. In addition, we also talked about the instances in which the letter "u" is pronounced in Spanish and the importance of the dieresis mark. (ex: bilingüe)

Social Studies: This week, we studied two more types of movement recorded in American history. We learned about the orphan trains that transported a huge number of orphans from New York to cities in the Midwest. We had great conversation, and the students were really interested in this topic. We also studied the Great Migration which saw the movement of many African American families moving from the rural South to the northern states and cities of the United States. We read the book "The Great Migration," and the students talked about how they had studied the author and illustrator Jacob Lawrence in their art classes. This was a really good book, and the artwork was absolutely beautiful.

Another Week Full of FUN Activities:

We had a fun day celebrating the love and friendship of our friends on Valentine's Day. It was fun to share laughs, smiles, cards, and goodies with each other.

In case you haven't heard yet from your student, we now have a FISH TANK in our classroom! I believe there are 7 guppies swimming around the tank. The students will be helping me to take care of them- feeding them, cleaning the tank, rinsing out the filter. I plan on getting a few more additions to the tank. Stay tuned! If you happen to want to gift anything for the tank, I will gladly accept it.

The students showed off their creativity and imagination by thinking of big ideas for the future playground space. Their ideas will be posted in the Intersection.

Seed Planting:

We will be planting seeds in the greenhouse on Tuesday. Please have your student bring in a labeled trowel (only if you have it!) They will be coming in handy to upturn and move the soil around.

From the Office:

TRIP Training

How would you like to learn how you can receive dollars that go directly to your family's tuition account simply by going about your ordinary business transactions? Our Tuition Reduction Incentive Program (TRIP) almost sounds too good to be true! But it's TRUE! And it works! Much of the TRIP exchanges can now be done directly on your phone! Kristi and Kim, our amazing TRIP coordinators, are willing to offer curious parents a workshop to learn how to participate so you can also receive some reductions in your tuition just by ordinary exchanges such as purchasing groceries, buying gas and taking a vacation! Even some orthodontists can be linked with your TRIP account! Join us for either of these two workshop sessions and bring your phone! You'll walk away from the time together ready to start chipping at your bill thanks to TRIP!
