Week of February 20 to 23

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we reviewed the 10 Commandments and talked about the ones that David had broken. We all sin; we all are imperfect. However, God chooses to forgive us if we truly repent of our sins. This is an amazing comfort and blessing. The students will be taking the test over Chapter 8: King David on either Thursday or Friday. Please check your email Saturday morning for the study materials.

Math: This week, the students have been writing equations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to solve word problems. I am doing something a bit different for the students' Mad Minute homework. It's called "Roll and Race," and this will take the place of the Mad Minute homework for the rest of this quarter. Please take a look at the picture below to see how it's played.

Reading: We have finished up our informational text unit and look forward to our new unit. Our new unit will be about analyzing and interpreting texts (their characters, themes, ideas, etc.) It is VERY important that the students are reading good quality Spanish chapter books that have strong development of characters, problems, solutions, and themes. Spanish picture books simply won't do. I encouraged the students to select books from the library when we visited today or to borrow some of my own Spanish chapter books. Some of the students said they have their own Spanish chapter books at home. If that is the case, they should be bringing those books in so that they can perform better during our reading classes.

Writing: We have moved on to a new unit- personal expertise essays. The students thought about topics that they already know much about then. They then thought of chapters that they'd like to include in their writing. We ended the week with the students starting the drafting process.

Social Studies: We have finished up our study of the types of movements of people documented throughout American history- orphan trains and the Native American Removal Act to name a few. We look forward to next week when we start our government lessons in preparation for our upcoming field trip to the Lansing capital.

Fish Update:

Perhaps some of your students have already shared this with you, but I am sad to say that our red female Betta fish- affectionately known as "Rosa Nieves"- passed away during our extended weekend. I did get a new male Betta fish on Tuesday, and he has survived this entire week. The students made name suggestions all week, and we voted on a name today. Welcome to our classroom, Burbujas ("Bubbles")!
