Week of October 21 and 22

Well, it has been a short and sweet week! Here's what we have been up to during these two days. Bible : We are continuing to read and understand the story of how Saul was chosen to be the first King of Israel. Math : We have started to examine Spanish story problems in detail. We are learning that some story problems can have too much or too little information. We, as mathematicians, have to be able to identify the information we need in order to solve the given question.  Writing : The students are continuing on writing their realistic fiction stories. I'm excited to see the final product in a few weeks! Reading : The students have been using empathy in order to make predictions about what will happen next in their chapter books.  Spelling : Here is next week's spelling list!

What We Have Learned this Week: Bible:  We have started the new unit about King Saul- Israel's first king. We have started to study how he came to meet Samuel and how Samuel knew he was to anoint Saul as king over Israel.  Math:  The students studied another type of area model used to multiply a two digit number by a one digit number. Later, we learned the short-cut method. We are now applying our knowledge in order to multiply a three digit number by a one digit number. We are stepping into their shoes and are using empathy to imagine their feelings and thoughts towards certain events in the books we are reading.  Writing:  The students are working hard on their realistic fiction stories! I am meeting with each of them during writing small groups and am excited to see their ideas develop into awesome short stories! Grammar:  This week, we learned how to form the...

We also saw Samuel acting on Israel's behalf and asking God to remember the Israelites before another battle against the Philistine army. We will be finishing this unit soon, and we will be testing over this unit on Tuesday, October 15. A paper study guide was sent home with the students on Thursday, October 10. What We Have Learned this Week: Math:  This week, we have been introduced to multiplication. We have started off by studying mental multiplication. It's important that the students really know their basic multiplication facts, for it will help them to be successful this year in math class.  Reading:  This week, we talked about how one good strategy of reading books is to imagine the events of the story in your mind just like a movie. We practiced doing that this week. Grammar:  We reviewed the only three Spanish irregular imperfect verbs- ir, ser, and ver. We also studied the similar Spanish sounds /ll/ and /y/. Science:  We are finished with our first science unit! The students developed and conducted improvement plans for reaction time when catching falling rulers. We also put our senses into practice by doing a blind taste test! It was so much fun. Spelling:  Here is next week's spelling list .   Honduras Hispanic Heritage Month 4th Grade Activity: ...
