What We Learned this Week:
Bible: We have been studying King Solomon this week! We learned about the origin of his famous wisdom and the extent of his wealth. We even saw how much the Queen of Sheba was impressed with his kingdom. We will soon learn about his shortcomings as king of Israel. This is a short unit, so the test is scheduled for Thursday, January 23. Here are the links to the English and Spanish study guides. The English study guide is for the parents to help guide their students. The hard copy of the Spanish study guide will be sent home on Tuesday. I am also including links to Blooket games that the students can use to review if they wish.
Math: This week, we have been writing equations to solve word problems with an unknown variable. The students have also been using comparison bars to help visualize and solve word problems.
Reading: We have been paying close attention to the titles and headings of our texts and using them to think about what the main idea / central theme of our books are. We have also been documenting the new facts that we learn from our texts.
Writing: The students took some time this week to think about who their audience will be for their persuasive essays. They are now organizing their claim statements, reasons, and audience into a graphic organizer. We are getting closer to starting the drafting process!
Social Studies: We have been taking a look at different kinds of special purposes maps of the United States and what information we can learn by studying them. We also talked about the many different ways that geographers divide the United States into different regions.
Spelling: We will NOT be having a spelling test next week. So, there is NO new spelling list to study. Enjoy!
*I will be starting up with math and reading small groups next week. I use small groups to check student understanding and re-teach. I will also be sending home brief summaries of the work we complete together in small groups.
Shovels:
If you sent a shovel to school with your child, it will remain at school for a few more days. The work that was asked of us will take a couple of days. The shovels will be sent home when we are completely finished. If you would still like to send a shovel, you are welcomed to do so! It might be wise to label your shovel with your name and / or last name.
Field Trip: Hemlock Crossings Nature Center (Friday, January 24):
We are looking forward to an upcoming field trip! The 4th grade classes will be going to Hemlock Crossings Nature Center on Friday, January 24. We will be eating lunch at school and then boarding the bus immediately after. Your child can order and eat a school lunch. The field trip will not interfere with that. Please make sure that your child has appropriate outdoor gear. We will be walking outside on some trails for part of the field trip!
