Week of March 10 to 14
What We Have Learned this Week:
Bible: We are studying the prophet Elisha and the work he did. We studied the story of the healing of Naaman and learned that God can use young children to do His work. Later, we studied the miracle of the floating ax head and how it was NOT some magic trick Elisha performed. My father, Henry Damsteegt, came to the classroom and showed us that an ax head does indeed sink in water. He also showed us a couple of magic tricks. The kids loved it! Finally, we learned how Elisha captured the Aramean army and extended God's grace to them by inviting them to a great feast. The chapter 13 test over Elisha is scheduled for early in the last week of March. I am providing the English study guide here so the parents can help support their student's studying. I am also including the Spanish study guide here for the students. They will receive their physical copy on Monday. Additionally, I am providing the links to some Blooket games that the students can play to prepare for their test:
Math: We have finished the measurement unit! We took the practice test, reviewed, and took the real test this week. Next week, we will work on correcting our tests and will move on to our new fractions unit. I have added all the students to Frax, so they are able to practice that at home if they would like to. It can count towards their math log homework. It is the exact same login for their Reflex Math account.
Reading: This week, we have been comparing characters from books with similar themes by discussing their similarities and their differences. We also compared ourselves to characters in our books that we have read and are currently reading.
Writing: The students should have selected their topic for their personal expertise essays. We have thought about some creative possible titles for our essays by thinking about some appropriate adjectives that could be used to describe our topic. We concluded the week by grouping our ideas of what to talk about in our essays into chapters. We talked about the importance of naming our chapters with attention-getting titles that creatively tap into our topic of the essay. It was fun!
Social Studies: We are starting to reach the end of our social studies unit! We will be switching over to Government by the middle of next week so that we can go on our field trip to Lansing prepared with the appropriate background knowledge. This week, we have been studying in-depth the implications of human and environmental interactions.
Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list!

March 28- Flashlight read- students bring in flashlights from home to read in their classrooms in the dark
Swimming Lessons Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! I recognize this program is new for some children and families. Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-4th graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of April 14-25.
9-10am: 1st Grade
10-11am: 4th Grade
11am-12pm: 2nd Grade
12:35-1:35pm: 3rd Grade
