Week of September 22 to 26

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we studied the love story of Ruth and Boaz. This story is also a love letter from God to us. He sent Jesus to become our Redeemer- just as Boaz was the kinsman-redeemer to Ruth.

The Judges and Ruth test is scheduled for Thursday, October 2. I am including the English study guide here. This is for the parents to help support their student's studying. I am including the Spanish study guide here. The students have already received their physical copies. Additionally, I am including a link to the Blooket review games here. The questions are modeled after the questions on the actual test. Happy studying!

Math: We have started unit 2 this week! We reviewed matrixes in addition to mental math multiplication. Some of the types of mental math multiplication we have studied is the following: 6 x 70, 6 x 700, 60 x 70. These types of mental math multiplication problems might be a great idea to review as part of their math log homework!

Reading: This week, we talked about strategies good readers can take when they come across a challenging and unknown word. We look forward to next week as we dive into a new unit centered around deeply analyzing characters in the books we are reading.

Writing: We have mapped out our realistic fiction stories and have begun to write our exciting beginnings! We are looking forward to continuing on with the writing process next week.

Science: This week, we have been studying our sense of sight and how it allows us to perceive the world around us and how it connects to our behavior. We watched some optical illusions videos and talked about how and why we observed what we saw (and didn't see!!). We discovered that we are not able to see anything if we are in an absolutely dark place with NO sunlight. We also have been trying to improve our reaction time to catching a falling ruler. We have certainly been busy this week in science class!

Spelling: Here is the list for next week.

Homework Folder Expectation Reminder:

Please remind your student that they are expected to bring their homework folder to school everyday. The homework folder will house all important documents that they need to transfer to and from school. Thank you!

Dunes Study Field Trip (Friday, October 3):

On Friday, October 3 we will be traveling to Spring Lake to participate in a 2-mile dune hike to explore the changes to land over time. This trip is hosted by the Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Commission. They are asking a few things of us:
1. Make sure your child has a good breakfast before the field trip. We will expend a lot of energy hiking outside on the trails and climbing the dune stairs.
2. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the variable weather conditions found at Lake Michigan. Conditions are often windy and cooler than nearby locations away from the lake. Dressing in layers is best as children can peel off an outer layer if they get warm or put one back on if they get cold.
3. Pack a labeled sack lunch with a drink. Also, pack a separate small backpack (like a sling bag) with a snack and water bottle- your child will carry this on the hike. The lunch will stay on the bus while we hike.
4. Children should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. This way they can explore without worrying about poison ivy, prickles, mosquitoes or stubbing their toes. They may want to apply sunscreen to their face and arms, depending on the forecast. Sunglasses or a hat may also be helpful- but only send them if they will be helpfulπŸ˜‰.
5. Be prepared to climb 200+ steps up and down stairs.

If you wish to chaperone this field trip, we have two spots available! Please view the sign-up here.

This will let me know that you have seen it. If the progress update happens to go missing in transit from school to home, please let me know and I will be more than happy to provide you another copy. Thank you for your partnership!

Think! Energy with SEMCO On-Campus Field Trip:

We just had our Think! Energy with SEMCO program and your student has brought home a free energy efficiency kit to help you save energy and water unless you opted out.

  • Please install the items you need and give things you cannot use to a friend or family member.

  • Help us earn funds for classroom supplies by doing a short survey called the Home Energy Worksheet (HEW) used to improve the program. Please complete the HEW by Friday, October 10 by returning the paper to me or completing it online at https://thinkenergy.org/semco/hew with my ID number: 327693.

  • There is a space on the HEW to provide your email address to be invited to do a 10-15 minute survey by the program's evaluator. This information is optional.

No kit? You can still benefit from the program if you opted out of taking a kit. There are many resources in the Family Activity Guide and on the program website at https://thinkenergy.org/semco. This includes installation videos and links to other ways to save energy and money.
