Week of December 1 to 5

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, in Bible we learned how David, his men, and their families fled to Philistia to get away from King Saul. David earned King Achish's trust and was assigned to live in the city of Ziklag. While living there, David carried out raids and eventually destroyed the Amalekites. We also studied the story of King Saul and the witch of Endor. Saul wanted to know the outcome of the upcoming battle with the Philistines, so he consulted the witch. During the consultation with the witch, Saul learned that God had definitely cut him off and that he and his sons would die in battle the next day. King Saul and his sons did indeed die during Israel's battle with the Philistines, and David and the Israelites mourned the deaths of King Saul and Jonathan.

The test is scheduled for Thursday, December 11. The study guide materials were provided before the Thanksgiving break. I am including the study guide links for your convenience. The English study guide is meant for the parents to help guide their student's studying at home. Here is the link to the Spanish study guide. Additionally, I am providing the link to the Blooket review games. The questions are modeled off of the test questions.

Math: We reviewed word problems that required different methods of calculations to find the solution- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some problems even required multi-steps to find the solution. We concluded the week by reviewing long division to gain fluency in this skill. Next week Friday, December 12, the students will be taking the Unit 3 Division test. The students will take a practice test on Monday AND will have the opportunity to correct their practice tests on that same day. They will be encouraged to take the practice test home on Monday to study and prepare for the actual test. The practice test is modeled after the actual test.

Reading: This week, we have been considering the central message of the non-fiction books we are reading. In order to do so, we have reflected on the parts of the book that we have already read, examined the table of contents, and took the title of the book into consideration. We also noted the new information we have learned whilst reading our books and connected it to the book's central message. We concluded the week by reading sections of our texts and summarizing that section's main idea / message.

Writing: We examined a few examples of good literary non-fiction books in class. The students will eventually write their own literary non-fiction book as their final writing project for this unit, so it was valuable to see some examples of literary non-fiction texts. The students settled on their topics for their literary non-fiction books and developed a list of possible sub-topics they could explore in their writing. Later, they started to draft the actual table of contents that will make its way into their books.

The class example I am using with the students is "baseball pitchers." My list of sub-topics were the following:
- the pitcher's mound
- the glove
- pitching trainers
- famous pitchers
- pitching records
- types of pitches
- signs

I then took a few of the sub-topics and created a rough table of contents:
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: What a Pitcher Needs
Chapter 3: The Pitcher's Mound
Chapter 4: A Helping Hand- Pitching Trainers
Chapter 5: Breaking Baseball Pitching Records
Chapter 6: Conclusion

Your student should have chosen a strong topic by now and should be close to finishing the rough table of contents complete with strong sub-topics.

Science: The students have been discovering different wave formations and types of waves! See the SmugMug link below for students experimenting with wave creation.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list!

Child's Advocacy Center for K-4:

As part of our mission to equip minds and nurture hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ, HC works to provide students with the knowledge and skills to guard themselves in this fallen world. Part of HC’s commitment to student safety is providing counsel and resources for sexual abuse prevention and intervention from the Children’s Advocacy Center. Please see the attached informed consent letter for more information. The Children’s advocacy center will not be sharing any videos during their lessons at Holland Christian.

If you have any questions about the content of the presentation, we encourage you to reach out to the Children’s Advocacy Center. If you would like your child to not participate in the presentation, please fill out this form at least one week prior to the presentation date. HC will anticipate participation unless they receive a submitted opt-out form.

Our classroom presentation will be on Wednesday, December 10th from 1:00 to 2:00.
