Week of January 12 to 16

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: The students reviewed and took the Unit 8 test about King David. We are looking forward to starting the next unit about King Solomon.

Math: This week, we have been working on solving word problems that require multiple steps in order to solve them. We have also been working on writing out equations that show those multiple steps.

If you wish for your student to practice this concept at home, I have put together some extra practice. An answer key is included for the parents. ;)

Reading: The students worked on using a graphic organizer to show problems and solutions as found in their non-fiction texts. We also talked about a handful of strategies we can use to uncover the meaning of an unknown word in our non-fiction books.

Writing: The students have transitioned over to writing out their chapters on their iPads this week.

Social Studies: This week, we have been talking about what "human characteristics" on a map are. We also talked about why certain natural features such as plains, mountains, rivers, oceanfronts, etc. would lead to humans creating certain structures.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list.

From the Office:

Hemlock Crossing Park Field Trip Information (Friday, January 23):

We are SO excited for our upcoming field trip to Hemlock Crossing Park on Friday, January 23. We are leaving school immediately after our lunch time. Please make sure to send your child to school with their full winter gear on this day! We will spend the afternoon outside, and it could certainly be a bit chilly.

Please check out this link which contains a parent letter from the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation program supervisor. Note: The students won't need to bring a snack with them on the field trip as we will arrive back to school on time to eat our afternoon snacks.

Additionally, we are still looking for a few more parents to chaperone this field trip. If this interests you, please check out this link. Thank you for considering! If you have signed up to chaperone this field trip, I will be reaching out via email really soon with some information.

Parent Help Volunteer Opportunity:

I am excited to share that on Thursday, January 22, our 4th graders will be leading a special buddy activity with their 2nd-grade buddies. To make this event a success for all the students, I am looking for a few parent volunteers to help with the following needs:

1. Snack Coordinator

We are looking for one volunteer to secure 35 individual bags of Smartfood white cheddar popcorn to serve as a snack for the students during the activity.

2. Snowman Template Artist

We are looking for an artistically inclined parent to help us create large snowman outlines on cardstock or poster board. These will serve as templates for the students' project.

  • Design: Each snowman should consist of three circles (large on the bottom, medium in the middle, and small on top).

  • Supplies: The school has plenty of cardstock and poster board available, so I can provide all the necessary materials for you to use!

How to Help:

If you are interested in helping out by providing the snacks or by creating these snowman templates, please send me an email! I would be happy to provide more specific details and answer any questions you might have.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity to support our students and their younger buddies!
