Week of January 9 to 13

What We Learned this Week

Bible: This week, the students reflected on what a good friend is and what it looks like. They based their reflections on the friendship between Jonathan and David. They created a poster that artistically reflected their own interpretation of what a good friend is. We also talked about how we need to allow God to guide us in our life- luck and chance has nothing to do with it.

Math: The students extended their knowledge of long division to the solving of word problems. It is important to CAREFULLY read the word problem to identify what the problem is asking of us. I encourage the students to keep on practicing their long division at home (single digit divisor and up to 4 digits in the dividend).

Writing: The students are progressing nicely on their persuasive essay planning. They created surveys and interview questions to ask people, and the information they gathered from the surveys and interviews can be used in their persuasive essays. The students will be working on writing their persuasive essays next week.

Grammar: This week, we talked about "pronombres interrogativos" and how they are used in Spanish sentences when forming a question. These types of pronouns will have a special accent mark.

Social Studies: The students worked on a U.S. Geography project on their iPads this week. They used Google Slides, and I am very pleased at how quickly they learned how to use the platform. Nice work, alumnos!

A Little Taste of Honduras!

We had a little taste of HONDURAS this week! Abram and Azele's grandmother just got back from her trip to Honduras and bought her grandchildren some typical Honduran "tajaditas" (plantain chips). Abram and Azele were kind enough to bring some tajaditas to share with the other students. We took the opportunity to talk about Honduran "pulperias" which are like little corner stores that sell snacks, fresh produce, cold drinks, candy, etc. But, our fun didn't stop there! Abram and Azele asked their mom if she could bring in some baleadas to share with the class on Friday. A baleada is a very common dish found in Honduras. It is a soft flour tortilla slathered with refried beans, Honduran crema, and Honduran crumbled cheese. You can also eat it with scrambled egg, platano, avocado, and sausage. Basically, it is the most perfect food. Thank you, Dannise, for being willing to prepare the baleadas and share with the students. They loved it. I tried to get a photo of all the kiddos eating their baleadas, but they were way too quick for me! Most of them finished eating their baleada by the time I tried getting a picture. Yummy!

This baleada snack time has also given me a bit of inspiration! I think it would be quite fun to have a snack time in the future with a different specific kind of Latin food from another country. If this interests you, feel free to get into communication with me so that we can make it happen and create an authentic "merienda tipica" (typical snack) time experience for the kiddos.
