Week of May 1 to 5
What We Learned this Week:
Bible: This week, we studied the first king of the divided kingdom of Israel- King Jeroboam. We learned about God's promise of blessings if only he accepted God. We learned about King Jeroboam's sins against God and saw the divided kingdom come under leadership to another handful of kings who did wrong against God.
Math: This week, we learned how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. Using that skill, the students learned how to add and subtract fractions.
Reading: We talked about the importance of understanding the setting- time and place- of our historical fiction stories in order to better understand our stories. The students are really enjoying our historical fiction book "Number the Stars," and they have started to read their own historical fiction books with their own literacy groups.
Writing: This week, we studied some literary essays and began to brainstorm ideas for our own class example of a literary essay. We will be writing our class example next week, and then the students will start the brainstorming process to create their very own.
From the Spanish Immersion Department:
It is rare that we have the opportunity to share a movie that accurately depicts hispanic culture. Netflix recently came out with the movie Chupa. This is based on the legend of the chupacabra in Mexico that began in the 1990s. They have done a great job of sharing typical family dynamics, food, and pop culture. While the chupacabra is typically portrayed as a scary, vampire-like creature and some people want to capture it, this movie puts a beautiful spin on how we can take care of all creatures and everyone deserves to be cared for in a family. As we follow Alex, the main character in the movie, we learn to be proud of the culture we come from and being bilingual. It's a wonderful mix of English and Spanish. Chupa is rated PG. We plan to have a special viewing for 2nd-4th graders only later this month. If you have any concerns with your child watching this movie, please let me know by Friday, May 19.
Summer is almost here and we are enthusiastically preparing for summer camp! If you would be willing to help us out with some recyclables between now and the end of the year our camp kids would appreciate it!
Here is a general list that you can send with your kiddos to school at any point between now and June 1st.
*Rinsed and clean bottle caps (Any size or color)
*Any size cardboard tubes (toilet, paper towel, etc...)
*cardboard boxes (cereal, granola bar, fruit snack, etc..)
*Cleaned (with soap and water) plastic yogurt cups
Tulip Time Parade Dismissal Procedure:
After we are done walking in the parade, we will be waiting across the road in front of the Holland Fire Department located near Kollen Park. Take a look at the photo to help you get an idea of where our waiting spot will be. I will have the green permission slips you all signed and sent to school. Before your child can leave our meeting spot, they will have to get the green permission slip from me.
From the Office and Staff Members:
Dear Rose Park Families,
We have the opportunity to bless and support area special needs families through a joint project by two local nonprofits: thelucasproject.org and A Kid Again. The Lucas Project was begun by one of our new Rose Park families and Ms. Scott's class will be helping to pack these care packages on June 1. Any gifts, either purchased through the Amazon Wish List or monetary donations given at https://thelucasproject.org website, will be welcomed and used to encourage caregivers of special needs and their entire family. What a wonderful way to share God's love with others as we end our school year. Please see the attached flyer for additional information.
Melanie Scott (2nd grade teacher)
