Week of May 8 to 12

What We Learned this Week:

Math: We have been working hard on multiplying fractions by other fractions and by whole numbers.

Reading: This week, we considered the real world events that we see portrayed in our historical fiction books. It is important to distinguish real world events and the ones the author creatively invented. We also explored how the characters acted and thought in response to these real world events.

Writing: We read through examples of literary essays and talked about the major themes- including what the character(s) learned by the end of the story.

Fun Events:

What a busy week full of fun! We worked on getting the plant sale ready, and the students created Mother's Day gifts for their moms. Be on the lookout for them. :) We feel incredibly blessed to have wonderful moms.

The Tulip Time parade was a lot of fun! It was a perfect day for it, and the students enjoyed themselves. Can't wait for next year!

From the Spanish Immersion Department:

It is rare that we have the opportunity to share a movie that accurately depicts hispanic culture. Netflix recently came out with the movie Chupa. This is based on the legend of the chupacabra in Mexico that began in the 1990s. They have done a great job of sharing typical family dynamics, food, and pop culture. While the chupacabra is typically portrayed as a scary, vampire-like creature and some people want to capture it, this movie puts a beautiful spin on how we can take care of all creatures and everyone deserves to be cared for in a family. As we follow Alex, the main character in the movie, we learn to be proud of the culture we come from and being bilingual. It's a wonderful mix of English and Spanish. Chupa is rated PG. We plan to have a special viewing for 2nd-4th graders only later this month. If you have any concerns with your child watching this movie, please let me know by Friday, May 19.

Summer is almost here and we are enthusiastically preparing for summer camp! If you would be willing to help us out with some recyclables between now and the end of the year our camp kids would appreciate it!

Here is a general list that you can send with your kiddos to school at any point between now and June 1st.
*Rinsed and clean bottle caps (Any size or color)

*Any size cardboard tubes (toilet, paper towel, etc...)

*cardboard boxes (cereal, granola bar, fruit snack, etc..)

*Cleaned (with soap and water) plastic yogurt cups

From the 4th Grade Team:

The 4th graders will be holding their plant sale on Friday, May 19 starting at 7:30. The children will be responsible for running the sale and "working" shifts according to a schedule the teachers will be making. If your child is willing to "work" a shift at 7:30 please let me know, and I can create the schedule accordingly.

When the students are not working a shift, they will be sitting on the grass at their own spot independently working on a packet. They are not allowed to run around and play. They must stay seated at their own work space. We suggest that the 4th graders bring some sort of lawn chair that they can set up and use as their work space.

If you have any cardboard boxes, please send them to school. We can use those boxes to box up the plants for the costumers after they have made their purchases.

From the Office:
