Week of September 5 to 8

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We have been diving deep into Pablo's ministry and studying certain chapters of Philippians and Acts. We ended the work by thinking about what our own spiritual gifts are and how they can be used to glorify and honor God.

Math: We were busy this week learning how to compare large numbers and how to read the names of large numbers and write them. The students even worked with me to create a bulletin board we can refer to to help us remember how to read large numbers in Spanish.

Reading: In our very first reading lesson, we talked about our strong reading habits and how we can foster other strong reading habits. We look forward to learning more in this unit.

Writing: The students have been brainstorming ideas for their realistic fiction writing story. We will be developing the characters more in the week to follow.

Grammar: This week, we reviewed the Spanish preterite tense endings. We also took some time during the week to point out Spanish past tense verbs and conclude if there were part of the preterite tense or not.

Science: We have been talking about what living organisms require in order to survive. We also have been thinking about the inside structure of living organisms-specifically plants- and how the inside structures are all connected. In order to study and observe the above-mentioned, we have set up the celery and food coloring experiment. The students put celery in water with food coloring, and they have been observing the effects. So far, we have seen the leaves of the celery and even the insides of the celery turn the color that was used to dye the water.

From Music Class:

MUSIC NOTE FROM MRS. BOER - Let me introduce myself. My name is Rochelle Boer and I am your child's music teacher. I have been a teacher at HC for 27 years and a teacher in the Christian schools for 34 years. Part of the music curriculum for fourth grade is learning how to play the recorder and read notated music. We would like to begin playing recorder the second week of October. If your child has a soprano recorder at home, they are welcome to use it. If you need to purchase one, your child may purchase one from me for $5. Some families may want to think about having two recorders, one at school to play and one at home to practice. The music classroom has recorders to borrow that are disinfected in case a student forgets their recorder on the day of music class but some don't feel comfortable with that. More information will follow later about recorder homework/practice expectations. I am excited about adding to our abilities to be Beauty Creators (one of our Discipleship Practices)!
