Week of February 3 to 7

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we studied the history of the different kingdom and how the kings of Judah and Israel differed. We identified the sins and consequences of Israel's king and will be studying "good king Asa." We will learn that he was not always "good." We will be finishing the unit next week, and we will test either on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. The students already have their hard copy of the study guide. Here is the Spanish study guide. Here is the English study guide you can use to help support your student's learning. I am also including some Blooket links that the students can play at home to review. 


Math: This week, we identified patterns in a given string of numbers. We then used those patterns to write algebraic rules and solve unknown variables in a given table. We will be finishing up this unit next week and will be testing.

Writing: The students are working so hard on their persuasive essays. We worked on the introduction paragraphs and are eager to start drafting the rest of our essays.

Grammar: The verbs "ser" and "estar" both mean "to be" in the Spanish language. As learners of the language, the distinction between the two verbs and the situations in which the verbs are to be used can be a tricky concept to understand. This week, we reviewed the situations in which we are to use "ser" or "estar." We also studied how to combine two Spanish sentences using appropriate transitional words. 

Social Studies: We are starting a new unit on human geography in the United States. We talked about some push and pull factors that might cause someone to leave their home country in search of a new country to live in. We will be studying different types of human movement found through-out the course of American history. We have started to study the movement of people towards the West via the Oregon Trail.

Ranch Hands

Would your family be interested in caring for our goats (the wonderful Rosie and Parker) and three chickens (Pearl, Opal, and Mera) on a Saturday or two this spring? It's a pretty simple task to be a ranch hand but does require knowledge of our barn/greenhouse locking system and feeding tasks. We are taking applications! Your child may write a note expressing interest on behalf of your family and bring to the office " applying" for the job! Or you can just email me of your interest at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org We're looking for five families who respond first to pilot the family partnership. Thank you for embracing the joy or critter bring to the lives of our students!

Swimming Lessons

Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! I recognize this program is new for some children and families. Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-4th graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of April 14-25.

  • 9-10am: 1st Grade

  • 10-11am: 4th Grade

  • 11am-12pm: 2nd Grade

  • 12:35-1:35pm: 3rd Grade

Save the Date: Spring Program

March 6 will be our Spring Program held at Christ Memorial from 6:30-7:30.  Your child's teacher will communicate more specifics to you soon.  We're excited to welcome you to an evening of community worship.

Valentine's Day Celebration:

We will be having a small Valentine's Day celebration on Thursday, February 13 after the afternoon recess. The students will be able to pass out their treats and cards to each other. If you'd like to send your child to school with a bag or small box to collect their goodies, please feel free to do so.

If your child plans on giving out Valentine's Day goodies, please make sure each classmate gets one. As far as I know, there are no allergies in this classroom. Please find a list below of all the names of the students in the class. :)


Quarter 3 Conferences:

Quarter 3 conferences are coming up soon! These conferences are special because they are STUDENT-LED. Please plan on your student being present for these conferences AND leading them.

What We Learned this Week Bible : We are kicking off our Bible class by understanding how Scripture interprets Scripture. We are studying the book of Philippians to do so. We investigated the events that took place during Paul's second missionary journey along with the people he met. Ultimately, we learned that Paul's primary focus was to know Christ even more- which should be our motive as well.  This unit is very short, so the students will be taking a quiz over the material we have learned thus far late next week. However, it is quite possible that the quiz will be pushed to early the following week. The students will be given a hard copy of the study guide, and I am including a digital copy of the study guide here as well. I also like to include links to a gamified version of the study guide. Week of September 16 to 20

What We Learned this Week: Bible:  We have finished up our study on the flawed prophet Samson. We are now studying another story that took place during the time of Israel's judges- the story of Ruth. We have read up on how Ruth and Naomi traveled back to Bethlehem and how Ruth met Boaz.  The students will be taking the Judges and Ruth Test early in the week of September 30 to October 4. I will be providing the students a physical copy of the Spanish study guide on Monday. I am providing an electronic version of the Spanish study guide here . I am also including an English study guide for parent use only. Feel free to use this resource to support your student.  Additionally, I have made a Blooket using the test questions. Week of October 7 to 11

What We Have Learned this Week: Bible:  We have moved on to the Samuel unit. We studied how God called him during the night and the significance of his conversation with God. Later, we learned of how the Israelites angered God and the attack of the Philistines which led to the capture of the ark of the covenant. We also saw Samuel acting on Israel's behalf and asking God to remember the Israelites before another battle against the Philistine army. We will be finishing this unit soon, and we will be testing over this unit on Tuesday, October 15. A paper study guide was sent home with the students on Thursday, October 10.
