Week of March 11 to 15
What We Learned this Week:
Bible: This week, we studied King Solomon's wealth and the visit of the Queen of Sheba. The students will be taking the King Solomon test on Friday, March 22. They have their study materials, and I sent the study guides (in Spanish and English) to your emails a few days ago.
Math: This week, we worked on listing factors of numbers. We then used that information to determine if numbers are prime or composite. We ended the week by working on patterns and using rules to add on to patterns. The students need to be on top of their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. If they are not, their future math classes will be hard since the foundation of math is built off of these basic facts.
If your student needs a fresh idea of what to do to practice his / her multiplication and division facts for the math weekly facts log, the following link to a game was shared with me today. I took a look at it, and it gets my stamp of approval. The students can definitely play this game at home to count towards their weekly facts log.
Writing: This week, we worked on expanding our writing. One way to do that is to draw the reader in by taking time to describe in detail the setting. We also spent some time reviewing strategies of taking ordinary sentences and expanding them into more sentences.
Social Studies: We are almost done with our government unit! Just in time for the upcoming field trip. This week, we focused on the 3 branches of government and the checks and balances system established between the three.
The big day is right around the corner! On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, all fourth graders will travel to Lansing to tour the state capitol building and the Impressions 5 Science Museum. The following is information that will be helpful for you.
Students must be at school by 7:00 AM. If your child is sick that day, please let me know by e-mail by 6:30 AM that morning. We plan to return back to school in time for students to catch the bus home at the end of the school day.
Each student attending needs a completely disposable bag lunch with a beverage (labeled with their name). Also, pack two extra snacks in their backpack that we will eat mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
Students may bring a backpack with quiet entertainment (books, drawing, etc. – NO electronics, phones, or smart watches of any type per Holland Christian policy) for the bus ride. Backpacks and their contents will be left on the bus during the tours of the museum and the capitol building. Teachers are not responsible for any student items that are lost or left behind. No pillows or blankets as the bus will be FULL of students.
We are looking forward to a fun and informative day. Please keep us in your prayers as we plan for and travel there!
Sincerely,
Mrs. VanderZwaag
