Week of March 4 to 8

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We talked about King Solomon's wealth and the temple he built. This was fascinating to us, and we really enjoyed seeing how the temple and the Garden of Eden is connected.

Math: The students worked on writing equations to solve for word problems requiring multiple steps to solve. Next week, we will look at prime and composite numbers as well as studying patterns.

If your student needs a fresh idea of what to do to practice his / her multiplication and division facts for the math weekly facts log, the following link to a game was shared with me today. I took a look at it, and it gets my stamp of approval. The students can definitely play this game at home to count towards their weekly facts log.

Reading: This week, We highlighted themes. We started off the week by coming up with ideas of themes by simply looking at the front and back cover of books. The students then thought about the books they have read that have similar themes and compared and contrasted the books. We ended the week by comparing and contrasting characters found in books with similar themes.

Writing: The students have worked hard on getting their ideas typed up. Next week, we will work on refining our writing.

Social Studies: This week, the students have been working on a project involving research on the three branches of government. We will culminate the project early next week and will continue with our government lessons in preparation for our upcoming field trip to the capital!

Lansing Field Trip Information:

The big day is right around the corner! On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, all fourth graders will travel to Lansing to tour the state capitol building and the Impressions 5 Science Museum. The following is information that will be helpful for you.

  1. Students must be at school by 7:00 AM.  If your child is sick that day, please let me know by e-mail by 6:30 AM that morning. We plan to return back to school in time for students to catch the bus home at the end of the school day.

  2. Each student attending needs a completely disposable bag lunch with a beverage (labeled with their name). Also, pack two extra snacks in their backpack that we will eat mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

  3. Students may bring a backpack with quiet entertainment (books, drawing, etc. – NO electronics, phones, or smart watches of any type per Holland Christian policy) for the bus ride. Backpacks and their contents will be left on the bus during the tours of the museum and the capitol building. Teachers are not responsible for any student items that are lost or left behind. No pillows or blankets as the bus will be FULL of students. ☺

We are looking forward to a fun and informative day. Please keep us in your prayers as we plan for and travel there!

Sincerely,

Mrs. VanderZwaag

Music Class Field Trip Information from Mrs. Boer:

The Holland Symphony Orchestra has invited the 4th graders from Holland and Zeeland to a concert on Hope College's campus. This concert takes place on Monday morning, March 11. We have been preparing for this concert in music class for a few months now. We have been asked by HSO to learn some songs to sing along with the orchestra. There is also one song in which we will play our recorders. This means your child will need to remember to bring their RECORDER to school on MONDAY! This will be a wonderful, local music experience for your child!
