Week of April 29 to May 3

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we talked about Elijah's physical and spiritual exhaustion after his victory on Mount Carmel. We focused on how God talked to Elijah in a still, small voice after the spectacular natural displays of wonder- the strong wind, an earthquake, and fire. It was in this moment of silence that God chose to speak to Elijah. We asked ourselves if we are taking moments of silence in our busy schedules to listen to God's voice. How can we hear His voice if we are surrounded by constant "noise"?

Math: We have started our fractions unit! This week, the students learned how to add unit fractions and how to determine if a fraction is bigger or smaller than another fraction. We also refreshed ourselves on how to pronounce fraction names in Spanish.

Some of the students and I were talking about the math fact fluency homework assignments. They talked about a website that they use to practice their multiplication facts. I took a look at it, and I like it! If your student is interested in trying out something new to do to complete their weekly math fact fluency homework, check out this website!

Reading: This week, we took a picture tour of Copenhagen, Denmark. The book we are reading as a class, "Number the Stars," takes place in this city. The kids are liking the book so far and are excited to continue reading it next week. We also worked on creating timelines that document real-world events that took place during WWII as well as documenting some events that have happened in the chapter books we are reading.

Writing: We have moved on to the Literary Essay Unit. We are taking some time to read and analyze examples of literary essays before we start the planning process for our own literary essays.

Grammar: In grammar class, we studied the two different ways that possession can be expressed in the Spanish language. We also reviewed the "silent h."

Social Studies: We talked about the natural resources found within the United States such as wood, land, water, oil, gas, and minerals. Next week, we will study both the positive and negative effects utilizing these natural resources has on the environment.

Plant Sale Update: Our 62 little seedlings are doing well! I had many student helpers come with me to the greenhouse during our recesses to check up on them and to water them. On Monday, we planted another tray of pepper seeds. We are a little late to the game on this second tray, but we are hopeful to produce little plants that can be sold at the plant sale at the end of this month.
