Week of February 24 to 28

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We have studied many stories this week! We studied the story of the call of Elisha and saw how ready and willing he was to follow Elijah. We then turned our attention to King Ahab and his disobedience to God- allowing Ben-Hadad (the king of Aram) to survive, orchestrating the murder of Naboth to steal his vineyard, and consulting false prophets in order to ensure his victory over the Arameans. Ultimately, we saw how God's Word always prevails. Elijah's prophecy came true, and the wild dogs licked up King Ahab's blood in the same spot where they had licked Naboth's blood.

The students will be taking the Unit 12 test over Elijah on Wednesday, March 5. The students already have their physical copy of the study guide, but I will also be providing the electronic copy here. I am also including the English study guide here. The parents can use it to help support their student's learning. In addition, I am including the links to the Blooket games below. The students can play them to help prepare for the test:

Math: We have done a lot this week! We practiced converting within the metric system (volume and weight). We briefly reviewed telling time, and with that knowledge we calculated elapsed time word problems. We ended the week by starting to take a look at the U.S. Customary System of Measurement. We started with linear measurements and converting units within the system.

Reading: We have started a brand-new unit! We kicked off the unit by thinking about the books we have read and thinking about the life lessons (or themes) we can learn from them. We have also thought about our characters' strong emotional reactions to events in the book and the decisions they make. We thought about what kinds of life lessons our characters could be showing us based upon their emotions and decisions.

Writing: We have officially finished our persuasive essays! The students have worked really hard on these essays, and I am proud of the work they have accomplished. We celebrated with the other 4th grade sections by getting together into small groups and fellowshipping over a snack as they read their essays out-loud and listened to their classmates' essays.

Social Studies: This week, we studied the major groups of people that have immigrated and settled in our beautiful state of Michigan. The students also had the chance to share their family history and talk about when their family members immigrated to the United States and why. We ended the week by reading a few picture books that narrated emigrant's stories of their move to the United States.

Grammar: We reviewed the great difference the accent makes in the Spanish language. Some Spanish words can be spelled the same way; the only difference being an accent mark. That accent mark changes the meaning of the word and can ask a question. We talked about the situations that would require the usage of an accent mark.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list!

Quarter 3 Conferences:

Quarter 3 conferences are coming up soon! These conferences are special because they are STUDENT-LED! Please plan on your student being present for these conferences AND leading them.

From the Office:

Swimming Lessons Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! I recognize this program is new for some children and families. Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-4th graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of April 14-25.
