Week of March 3 to 7

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We have finished up the Elijah unit. The students took the test this week, and we started our next unit about Elisha. We learned about two miracles he performed- purifying the poisonous soup and feeding the crowd of 100.

Math: We have done SO much this week! We worked on converting liquid volume within the US Customary System as well as calculating the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles. We pushed our thinking even more as we calculated the area and perimeter of irregular shapes. If your child would like more practice on calculating the area and perimeter of irregular shapes, I am including this link to some practice. It even has an answer key, so they can check their answers.

Reading: We have been thinking about themes of books this week. We worked on examining the front cover, title, and back cover book information in order to think of possible themes.

Writing: We are starting a new unit on "Personal Expertise." For this unit, the students will be selecting a theme that they are knowledgable about. They will write an essay about that topic and will include non-fiction text features. This week, we worked on editing our brainstorming to ensure that our possible topics are not too large.

Social Studies: This week, we investigated the physical items immigrants brought with them to America. We put ourselves into their shoes by imagining what we would bring in a trunk if we were immigrants traveling to the United States. We also talked about the concept of culture and examples of it. We then talked about how culture impacts an area in which groups of immigrants settle. Lastly, we led a discussion about how people have adapted to an environment (types of houses and interacting with the land around them).

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling test!

Quarter 3 Conferences:

Quarter 3 conferences are coming up soon! These conferences are special because they are STUDENT-LED! Please plan on your student being present for these conferences AND leading them.

From the Office:

Swimming Lessons Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! I recognize this program is new for some children and families. Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-4th graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of April 14-25.

  • 9-10am: 1st Grade

  • 10-11am: 4th Grade

  • 11am-12pm: 2nd Grade

  • 12:35-1:35pm: 3rd Grade
