Week of April 28 to May 2

What We Have Learned this Week:

Bible: We studied the minor kings of Israel, and we noticed that most of them "did evil in the eyes of the Lord." We learned about the prophets Joel and Amos and their messages to Israel calling for repentance. Some later kings did indeed follow God, but the arrival of new kings was much like the up and down movement of a teeter-totter. Sometimes, the kings were "high" as they loved and served God. Sometimes, the kings were "low" as they continued to "do evil in the eyes of the Lord."

The Unit 14 test will be on either May 13 or 14- depending on our pace. I am including the English study guide so that the parents can help guide and support their child's studying. Additionally, I am including the Spanish study guide. Students will get their physical copy on Monday, May 5. If your student would like to, they can play these Blooket games in order to help them review for their upcoming test.

Math: This week, we learned how to use multiplication to calculate equivalent fractions. We then spent the rest of the week learning how to compare fractions with unlike denominators by using number lines and fraction bars. However, since we cannot always rely on the use of number lines and fraction bars to compare fractions, we have talked about how we can use common denominators to compare fractions.

Reading: We have started the book "Number the Stars," and we are certainly enjoying the book. I hope the students are feeling immersed into the world of our characters as we take the time to read, discuss, view visuals, and respond to comprehension questions.

Writing: We are working hard on continuing drafting and improving our personal expertise essays. We talked about methods of how to expand simple sentences using techniques such as comparing, introducing new knowledge, and painting a visual image in our minds. We also spent some time talking about how to introduce the scenery and setting within an introduction paragraph.

Social Studies: We have started our economics unit. We learned how scarcity and human unlimited wants and desires is the foundation for economics as it seeks to solve the problem of scarcity. We talked about a market economy and different types of exchanges that we ourselves have engaged in.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list!

From Mrs. Rietman:

Recorder karate is off to a great start, and I'm hoping to see some more participation in the coming weeks. Please click on this link for all the resources your student will need.  It contains a list of songs, links to all the demo videos, and the recorder music for each belt.
Thanks in advance for passing this along to your 4th grader.

4th Grade Plant Sale Work Shifts:

The 4th grade teachers and looking forward to the plant sale, and we are starting to plan for this FUN event. The students will be working shifts, and we need some willing workers to take the early shifts. I am looking for three students to work the 7:30 AM to 7:50 AM shift AND three different students to work the 7:50 AM to 8:10 AM shift. Please be mindful that the plant sale is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21. If your student wishes to work one of these early shifts AND you are able to get your student to school on time for their shift, please send me an email and I will add the student to that particular work shift.

Please be on the lookout later this month for more plant sale details including the official work schedule and what
