Week of September 8 to 12
What We Learned this Week:
Bible: We have finished our unit and have started a new unit centered around Israel's judges. We studied the story of the left-handed judge Ehud; we look forward to learning about more of Israel's judges.
Math: We reviewed subtraction with regrouping and the circumstances that call for it (0's and when the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom digit in that same column). We also learned how we can check our subtraction problems by performing an addition problem. Lastly, we worked on identifying errors in subtraction problems and how to use estimation to check for reasonableness within a subtraction problem.
Reading: This week, we talked about strong reading habits and how 4th graders can cultivate strong reading habits at home.
Writing: We analyzed a "boring" introduction to a story about kites. We brainstormed different ideas of how to improve the introduction by using action, dialogue, sounds, and thoughts. The students applied their knowledge by trying their hand at re-writing the "boring" introduction in a fresh, new, and exciting opening. Later, we read an example of a realistic fiction piece and identified its many parts (exciting beginning, main event, conclusion, possible themes, story summary, etc.). The students took this story's beginning and modified it slightly as they wrote their own brand-new introduction to the story.
Science: The students brainstormed ways in which wild animals have internal and external features that allow it to survive. They applied their knowledge in an artistic form as they selected and drew a picture of a wild animal of their choosing. They then wrote about how the animal is perfectly equipped with internal external features to survive. Later in the week, we had the wonderful opportunity to dissect a lily and investigate and label the different parts involved in its reproductive cycle. It was a lot of fun!
Spelling: Here is the list for next week.
Think! Energy with SEMCO:
Our class will be participating in Think! Energy with SEMCO and receiving free energy efficiency kits.
