Week of October 6 to 10

What We Have Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, we started our new Samuel unit. We learned about Hannah and how she earnestly prayed to God for a son. We talked about how God sometimes doesn't always answer our prayers with a "yes," and that means God's understanding is better than ours. Later, we studied how God called out to Samuel in the night and told a prophecy concerning Eli and his two evil sons. We ended the week by studying how the Philistine army captured the ark of the covenant from the Israelites and how Hophni and Phinehas (Eli's two sons) were killed in battle. Upon hearing the news of his sons' death, Eli fell backwards out of his chair and died. Thus, God's prophecy in Samuel's vision was fulfilled.

The test is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15. The students already have the physical copy of the study guide. You will find the English study guide here, and this is meant as a support tool for the parents at home. You can find the Spanish study guide here. If you allow your student to play the Blooket review games, the link can be found here. Happy studying!

Math: The students learned the "short-cut" method to multiplying a single digit number by a two-digit number. We then moved on to multiplying a single digit number by a three-digit number by using area models. We concluded the week by investigating word problems. Sometimes, a word problem has too much information, and it is up to us to identify the unnecessary information and disregard it before attempting to solve the problem. On the other hand, sometimes a word problem does not have enough information, and the problem cannot be solved.

Reading: We have been discussing empathy we develop for our characters and how we can use that to help us change our minds / opinions about that. We also practiced using empathy to predict how our characters will react to a new situation.

Writing: This week, we talked about the importance of taking the time to carefully describe in details our critical characters, settings, and objects. One worded adjectives simply won't cut it! :))

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list.

Think! Energy with SEMCO On-Campus Field Trip:

A few weeks ago, we had our Think! Energy with SEMCO program and your student has brought home a free energy efficiency kit to help you save energy and water unless you opted out.

  • Please install the items you need and give things you cannot use to a friend or family member.

  • Help us earn funds for classroom supplies by doing a short survey called the Home Energy Worksheet (HEW) used to improve the program. Please complete the HEW by Friday, October 10 by returning the paper to me or completing it online at https://thinkenergy.org/semco/hew with my ID number: 327693.

  • There is a space on the HEW to provide your email address to be invited to do a 10-15 minute survey by the program's evaluator. This information is optional.

No kit? You can still benefit from the program if you opted out of taking a kit. There are many resources in the Family Activity Guide and on the program website at https://thinkenergy.org/semco. This includes installation videos and links to other ways to save energy and money.
