Week of September 29 to October 3
What We Learned this Week:
Bible: This week, we reviewed and tested over the Judges and Ruth unit.
Our next unit will focus on Samuel. This unit only consists of a few lessons which means the unit test will approach rather quickly. The test will most likely happen mid-week during the week of October 13 to 17. In order to provide sufficient study and review time at home, I am providing the study materials right away. You will find the English study guide here. This is meant as a support tool for the parents at home. You can find the Spanish study guide here, and I will provide the students with their hard copy very soon. If you allow your student to play the Blooket review games, the link can be found here. Happy studying!
Math: This week, we investigated three methods to multiply a single digit number by a two-digit number- the place value sections method, expanded notation form method, and algebraic notation form method.
Reading: We have started our novel study on "The Tiger Rising." This week, we have been stepping into the worlds of our characters and taking time to consider their thoughts and feelings as they encounter and deal with situations and other people.
Writing: This week, we talked about how we can specifically add more details in our realistic fiction essays. It's not just all about adding an adjective or two! We also emphasized that our stories must include a critical main character, setting, and object.
Science: We conducted two more tests this week to gauge our senses of touch AND taste. The kids dunked their hands into warm and cold water at the same time and then put their hands into a container which held room temperature water. Ask them about the interesting sensation they felt! We ended our round of tests with a blind taste test. Students ate chopped apples, pears, and onions without the ability to see for the first round. For the second round, they were able to look at the food before eating it. It was "deliciously" fun!
Spelling: Here is the link to next week's list.
Homework Folder Expectation Reminder:
Please remind your student that they are expected to bring their homework folder to school everyday. The homework folder will house all important documents that they need to transfer to and from school. Thank you!

Monthly Progress Update (September):
I have sent home our very first monthly progress update for the month of September. Please look it over, sign it, and send it back to school with your student by Monday. This will let me know that you have seen it. If the progress update happens to go missing in transit from school to home, please let me know and I will be more than happy to provide you another copy. Thank you for your partnership!
Smug Mug (Photos Viewing):
I will be uploading the photos I take of our class to this link. You can save / bookmark this link in order to view our awesome photos!
Think! Energy with SEMCO On-Campus Field Trip:
Last week, we had our Think! Energy with SEMCO program and your student has brought home a free energy efficiency kit to help you save energy and water unless you opted out.
Please install the items you need and give things you cannot use to a friend or family member.
Help us earn funds for classroom supplies by doing a short survey called the Home Energy Worksheet (HEW) used to improve the program. Please complete the HEW by Friday, October 10 by returning the paper to me or completing it online at https://thinkenergy.org/semco/
hew with my ID number: 327693. There is a space on the HEW to provide your email address to be invited to do a 10-15 minute survey by the program's evaluator. This information is optional.
No kit? You can still benefit from the program if you opted out of taking a kit. There are many resources in the Family Activity Guide and on the program website at https://thinkenergy.org/semco. This includes installation videos and links to other ways to save energy and money.
