Week of November 10 to 14

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: We talked about David and Jonathan's friendship. We read how Jonathan protected David during the New Moon festival by devising a plan to test and confirm King Saul's intentions toward David. Saul grew angry at David's absence during the festival which prompted Jonathan to shoot his arrows at a further distance which indicated to David Saul's anger toward him. The students reflected on what a true friend is like and illustrated their ideas on a poster.

Math: This week, we have spent time practicing the different methods of division. We also learned how to divide using the "digit by digit" method.

Reading: This week, we talked about the struggles that our main characters face and overcome and what that could reveal to us as readers.

Starting next week, we will be starting a non-fiction unit in reading class. If they would like, students may read Spanish non-fiction books (informational texts) at home to count towards their reading minutes log homework.

Writing: We have finished our realistic fiction stories! The students worked hard to put the final touches on their stories this week. We got together with the other 4th grade sections and broke off into small groups to listen to each other's stories and give feedback. It was such a wonderful way to celebrate the work they have done.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling lists!

Reading Informational Unit Information:

Next week, the students and I will be embarking on an exciting new Informational Reading Unit!

We will be diving into a rich selection of non-fiction texts, including classic non-fiction articles, narrative non-fiction chapter books, and hybrid non-fiction books. Over the past couple of years, I have been actively building our classroom library to provide the students with a wide range of materials for this unit.

To ensure every student has a rich selection of books at their reading level, I am currently still in need of a few more narrative non-fiction chapter books and hybrid non-fiction books.

If you are interested in helping expand our collection so that both our present and future students can enjoy these wonderful resources, a book donation would be SO appreciated!

Examples of the books we need:

  • Hybrid Non-Fiction: (The first four lines on my Amazon wishlist, such as "Querido Salvatierra" through the Magic School Bus "Explota," are examples of this genre.)

  • Narrative Non-Fiction Chapter Books: (All of the "¿Quién fue...?" and "¿Qué fue...?" chapter books on the list fit this category.)

Thank you for your continued partnership in making our classroom an amazing learning environment.

Scholastic News November 17, 2025:

I have the Spanish Edition of the Scholastic News publication from November 17, 2025. This could be read and counted for the Spanish reading minutes log homework! Of course, strong fictional Spanish chapter books are a wonderful option for students to read to complete their Spanish reading minutes log homework.

Christmas Gifts for the Students:

We are collecting 13 copies of the book, Jesús te llama: 365 lecturas devocionales para niños by Sarah Young, so every student can receive their own copy as a Christmas gift during our class Christmas party. If you would like to help out, please take a look at this SignUp Genius. Thank you so much!
