Week of November 3 to 7

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: God's spirit left Saul, and Samuel anointed David as the next king of Israel. God was with David as David went to Saul's house to become his armor-bearer and play soothing music for him. God continued to be with David as he faced the war-champion Goliath and defeated him.

Math: This week, we started our division unit. We learned the names of the parts of a division problem in addition to how to multiply and add the remainder in order to check their work. We ended the week by learning how to divide using the place values method.

Reading: We are continuing with our novel study on "The Tiger Rising." This week, we talked about the special objects and people that our main characters hold close to them and what that reveals to us as readers.

Writing: The students are finishing up their realistic fiction stories! We plan finishing the realistic fiction unit on Friday, November 14. On that day, the students will get together with the other 4th grade sections and share their stories. The students will celebrate each other and all the hard work they have put into their stories.

Spelling: Here are the spelling lists for next week!

Reading Informational Unit Information:

In just two weeks, the students and I will be embarking on an exciting new Informational Reading Unit!

We will be diving into a rich selection of non-fiction texts, including classic non-fiction articles, narrative non-fiction chapter books, and hybrid non-fiction books. Over the past couple of years, I have been actively building our classroom library to provide the students with a wide range of materials for this unit.

To ensure every student has a rich selection of books at their reading level, I am currently still in need of a few more narrative non-fiction chapter books and hybrid non-fiction books.

If you are interested in helping expand our collection so that both our present and future students can enjoy these wonderful resources, a book donation would be SO appreciated!

Examples of the books we need:

  • Hybrid Non-Fiction: (The first four lines on my Amazon wishlist, such as "Querido Salvatierra" through the Magic School Bus "Explota," are examples of this genre.)

  • Narrative Non-Fiction Chapter Books: (All of the "¿Quién fue...?" and "¿Qué fue...?" chapter books on the list fit this category.)

Thank you for your continued partnership in making our classroom an amazing learning environment.
