Week of February 17 to 20

What We Learned this Week:

Bible: This week, our class explored the lives of three different kings and the lessons we can learn from their leadership and faith. Here is a summary of what we studied:

👑 King Abijah: Remembering the Covenant

We began the week by looking at King Abijah. We learned how he reminded the Israelites of their sacred covenant with God. Because of his faith and reliance on that promise, God granted Abijah and the army of Judah a great victory.

👑 King Asa: The Importance of Obedience

Next, we studied King Asa. For most of his reign, Asa followed God's path, and we saw how God poured out blessings on both the king and His people during those times. However, we also discussed the difficult lesson that both the leader and the people suffered whenever they turned away from following God.

👑 King Ahab: Resisting Negative Influences

Finally, we looked at King Ahab as a cautionary tale. Ahab allowed himself to be swayed by evil influences, which led him away from God. We talked as a class about the importance of being strong and resisting influences in our own lives that might draw us away from our faith.

The Unit 11 test is scheduled for Tuesday, February 24. To help your child prepare, please find the following resources below:

Happy studying!

Math: This week, we have been diving into the metric system. We learned the metric units of measurement for length, liquid volume, and weights as well has how to convert units within the metric system. The chart below summarizes the basic metric units and some conversions. We ended the week by reviewing the units of time and working on conversion of time.

Reading: We have officially started our brand-new interpretative and analytical reading unit. All of the students have selected a "good fit" chapter book that has strong characters, symbolic settings, and a plot that carries the story. We have also started to read our class mentor text together. We will spend some time on this text together and have weekly discussions about the chapters we read together. We started this new unit by considering other recent chapter books we have finished and thinking about the life lessons they have taught us.

Writing: We have been working really hard on elaborating our writing in our "books of expertise." Specifically, we focused on identifying areas in which we could provide specific examples, names, and numbers to make our writing more detailed and informative.

Social Studies: This week, we have been studying moments in American history where we have seen great movements of people. This is also known as "migration." We have read several books and other media such as a primary source and a play about different types of migration. Some of the different types of migration we have studied this week include the following: westward movement, the underground railroad, orphan trains, the "great migration," and the Native American removal.

Spelling: Here is the link to next week's spelling list!
